And , all this while involving the group, designing a game that worked, and yet would be fun.
As you can imagine, designing and developing that first game, was truly a voyage into the unknown. And there were no books to help. In fact, it’s fair to say that….
Designing that first game on my own, without help was emotional torture, and took tremendous time
It was a bit like going to the dentist, and you know that you need to go through with it, and you know that what you are doing is important, and you know that you’ll be glad when it’s over, but in the meantime it’s so painful, and you struggle with figuring out the next step, and you desperately want to find a way to get through it as easily as possible.
I involved the group, all adults court ordered into treatment. I explored their stories in creating the game. I collected facts about alcohol and drugs, from experts, and then I painstakingly attempted to build them into some kind of game that could be played together, a game that would teach, and would be fun.
It won’t surprise you to hear that designing that first game without experience, without guidance took me a very long time. And it was a tough job.
I still remember the questions you keep asking yourself in that kind of situation.
- Will I be able to involve the group in the process?
- What if I miss something so important?
- What if it isn’t fun?
- Will the game work?
- What will people think of my game and of me personally?
And as you consider all of the worrying I did about those questions, and the mountain of information I had collected to design the game, and the fact that I didn’t have a plan or structure, you can easily imagine how designing that first game was stressful, and involving a group in the process with me made it even more so.
But you know what? Even with all of the worrying and anxiety, it was definitely worth it. One hundred percent!. It’s one of those things that when you do it properly, you never regret it.
You see creating that first board game with the substance abuse group was truly a great game. It was a game about alcohol and drugs, a game about lessons, and it left me deeply moved and inspired to create more.
So afterwards, I forgot all about the anxiety and stress, and decided to go out and help other people design great board games.
I learned everything I could about making great board games, so that I could teach others how to do the same, to meet their needs regardless of the problem. I explored how to personalize them to help children complete chores, or learn to read or to create connections between family members
Since my first game, I have been privileged to design several board games, and I have designed them with and without others involvements. ( The best ones are those that involve others) I have done this for people of all ages, of all backgrounds, and in all circumstances. And it has given me some of the most rewarding experiences in my counseling sessions.
