Dr. Phil Television Review
Dr. Phil offers a no nonsense, "the buck stops here" approach to counseling. While he states he is a psychologist, Dr. Phil is trained as a family therapist. His approach is based on a short term treatment model. It has to be, he has less than one hour to prove his point and get results in families fast. He looks at the entire family and the relationships between family members. His style is direct and active, demonstrating a family systems approach to counseling.
While I enjoy watching Dr. Phil, his style might be improved if he offered guests on the show, to demonstrate various approaches to family counseling. There are no guests. On occasion his wife Robin shows up and makes an appearance. The down side to Dr. Phil is that he is all about Dr. Phil. It would be a much better show with guests.
His approach offers controversy, an effective approach for achieving ratings. He draws the audience a bit closer with the stories of dramas in the family. One can relate, the story could be yours. He has an amazing ability to get results fast, one hour or less considering commercial breaks.
He excels at promoting products and services and has done a fine job of branding his name. The marketing behind Dr. Phil is exceptional.
He offers wit and style. He isn't always the most sensitive guy, but his approach works great for television, and he is effective in helping people change. And that's what television is all about.
